My career started with teaching. First, as a music teacher where I developed my early 1-to-1 skills, then in the classroom as a primary school teacher, before becoming an area manager and trainer for a school for dyslexic adults. These early careers gave me extensive teaching and explanatory skills that form the foundation of everything I do today.
My therapeutic training spans multiple modalities, and I've been fortunate to study with internationally respected teachers. My foundation is in Clinical Hypnotherapy, trained by Randal Churchill and the late Ormond McGill. I subsequently studied CBT and Stoic philosophy with Donald Robertson, author of How to Think Like a Roman Emperor, and Therapeutic Language Patterns with John Seymour, one of the world's most respected trainers in the field. My respiratory physiology training was completed at the Buteyko Clinic International with Patrick McKeown, arguably the world's leading expert on breathing pattern disorders and their effect on health and performance.
From 2006 to 2023, I served as Lead Learning and Performance Coach at the Royal Marines Training Headquarters, working across the Ministry of Defence and other government agencies. I coached thousands of military personnel—from junior ranks to ship captains, submarine commanders, fighter pilots, nuclear engineers, and brigadiers—while teaching on every leadership course from corporals to colonels. This work, which included regular speaking at institutions such as Army Staff Leadership School (ASLS), Defence Academy, and Dartmouth Royal Navy College (BRNC), taught me profound lessons about performance under pressure and what sustained excellence truly costs.
Since 2012, I've worked with high street and investment banks, alongside maintaining a private practice with accomplished individuals across finance, sports, entertainment, and entrepreneurship. This civilian work revealed that the challenges facing high achievers are remarkably consistent across domains—the specific pressures and costs of sustained peak performance transcend any particular field.
Working with people at the edges of human capability—whether in military or civilian contexts—showed me that traditional approaches often miss the physiological foundations that make everything else possible. In recent years, I've developed an integrated understanding of how breathing, sleep, and metabolism fundamentally influence perception, motivation, decision-making, and cognition.
My current practice focuses on helping successful individuals navigate the unexpected burdens that come with achievement. The acquisition of wealth, status, and influence often places demands on mind, body, and spirit that few anticipate. My 12-month programmes work to reset physiology, rediscover purpose, and reconnect people with themselves—addressing the whole person, not just surface symptoms.
My work extends beyond my main practice—I run a local Buteyko clinic on a pay-what-you-can basis and take on pro bono cases, ensuring help is available regardless of circumstances. When I'm not working, I'm a father and husband to three boys in Devon, where family life continues to teach me about resilience, growth, and what truly matters—lessons that inevitably find their way into my work.
